From idea to assembly: how is a Col&McArthur watch born?

Designing a watch is a demanding art where creativity blends with technical precision. Behind each piece lies a story, powerful symbols, and the passionate expertise of our watchmakers. In this article, delve into the heart of the process that brings to life the timepieces destined to adorn your wrist.

INSPIRATION: WHEN A WATCH BEGINS WITH STORY

Each watch is born from the same guiding principle: to perpetuate memory and honor history. To pay tribute to a figure, an event, or sacrifices that have shaped our world. This could be the man who marched on battlefields to defend his family and their freedom, the artist whose voice transcends notes to become emotions, moments, and memories, or the ingenuity of women and men who push their limits and leave their mark through their actions, ambitions, and creations.

It is in this spirit that collections such as Berlin 1989, in memory of the fall of the wall, Hallyday 2017, dedicated to Johnny Hallyday or more recently Leonardo 1519, celebrating the timeless genius of Leonardo da Vinci, were created.

At Col&MacArthur, history always precedes creation. It is our guiding principle.

THE DESIGN: BETWEEN SYMBOLS AND SIGNATURE ELEMENTS

The next step involves delving into the heart of the event or the life of the chosen figure. Every historical turning point, every word spoken, every emotion conveyed is rigorously studied. Then comes the role of our designers: to give shape to these ideas, to translate them into lines, textures, and symbols.

A simple glance at the watch should be enough to transport you to that moment in history. Every detail then finds its meaning: a dial, a case, a background adorned with inspired engravings, exclusive typography, and bespoke hour markers. From the choice of a color reminiscent of a flag to the hands that have become narrative vehicles, nothing is left to chance.

From initial sketches emerge 3D models, where inspiration constantly interacts with the constraints of watchmaking. A subtle balance where each element is rooted in history.

Official partnerships and integration of signature elements

The natural extension of our creative process involves engaging with institutions and rights holders connected to our themes. From the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice and the Italian Ministry of Culture, holders of the Vitruvian Man's rights, to obtaining permission to use the NASA logo, each step is guided by a profound respect for history and its heritage. We also seek out authentic elements: fragments of the Berlin Wall, rare meteorites in partnership with MSG Meteorites, and others that will lend a tangible dimension to our creations.

Whether it's a symbolic element requiring authorization or a signature feature that makes a collection unique, nothing is left to chance. Every detail becomes a key piece of the story we tell.

From each component to the assembly, Belgian know-how

Now is the time to bring the sketches, symbols, and signature elements to life as physical components. Together with our partners, we carefully select each element: 316L steel cases, Swiss Ronda or Sellita movements, and many other components that shape the soul of our watches.

Once assembled in our workshops, these components take shape in the expert hands of our watchmaker. Each timepiece is meticulously assembled and then subjected to rigorous quality control to ensure that the story you wear unfolds accurately and reliably.

After these steps, your watch is returned to you in its case, accompanied by its warranty, certificates of authenticity and a booklet outlining the symbols that give it its full meaning.
