Dive into the History of Resilience.
The current era is marked by profound crises: COVID-19, inflation, and the war in Ukraine. Faced with these challenges, Col&MacArthur wishes to convey a message of hope through the Resilience 2020 watch, a symbol of human strength in the face of adversity and the courage needed to recover.
The dial reveals a fragmented Earth, then repaired according to the ancestral art of
Kintsugi. Born in Japan in the 16th century, this art consists of repairing broken objects using gold powder, not to hide the fractures, but to enhance them. A profound philosophy: to make each flaw a precious trace of the past, and each scar, a proof of rebirth.
In March 2020, as the world plunged into uncertainty, the Liège duo NOIR Artist took a hopeful initiative. Lucien Gilson, painter and muralist, accompanied by his brother Martin, gave birth to a lithograph entitled Global Resilience , created to benefit the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières. A strong, artistic and united gesture, born in the heart of the turmoil, to remind us that even in chaos, creation
can gather and heal.
In an innovative architecture, the dial overhangs the hands, reversing
the usual order of time. The second hand takes the form of the logo of
NOIR Artist, like a common thread of the movement. The hours and minutes,
as for them, are embodied by two white points - sober and silent markers, which mark the passage of time with discretion and precision.
On the dial, the letters of the word Kintsukuroi replace the traditional indexes. Each of them marks a milestone, a fragment of this Japanese philosophy that makes repair an art, and resilience, a strength. A subtle reminder that every wound can become beauty, and every trial, a rebirth.
A design inspired by the art of Kintsugi.
The dial of the 2020 Resilience watch was designed in collaboration with NOIR Artist and is inspired by the ancient Japanese method of Kintsugi. This art, which involves repairing ceramic objects by highlighting the cracks with gold powder, symbolizes the beauty in repair. Rather than being hidden, cracks are accentuated, transforming the fractures into a stronger and more beautiful work of art. This design represents not only the resilience of the Earth after hardship, but also that of humanity, rebuilding and thriving beyond wounds.
“What is broken lets through more light than what is intact.”
— Christian Bobin
