1918

We will not forget them

After 1,561 days of war and approximately 10 million Allied soldiers killed, the Armistice was signed on November 11 in the forest of Compiègne in the famous Wagon 2419D. The day this Armistice was signed put an end to what is known as "The Great War." A very unusual day with a chronology of events that deserves to be recounted.

The signature of November 11, 1918

The Armistice was signed at dawn on November 11, 1918, in the legendary wagon No. 2419D of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), in the heart of the Compiègne forest, at 5:00 a.m., marking the end of 1,565 days of war.

The Armistice and its ceasefire

Although the Armistice was signed at 5:00 a.m., the ceasefire did not take effect until 11:00 a.m., leaving the tragic six-hour wait to cost the lives of more than 800 Allied soldiers.

George Ellison

The last British soldier to fall in combat was George Ellison. He died in the conflict at 9:30 a.m., an hour and a half before the end of the war.

The poppy flower

During the Second Battle of Passchendaele, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was deeply affected by the loss of his friend. After arranging his funeral, he observed that poppies grew quickly on the graves of fallen soldiers. The following day, he composed the poem "In Flanders Fields." This poem transformed the poppy into a symbol of remembrance for the fallen, a poignant tribute that appears at 11:00 on the watch face, the very hour of the ceasefire.

A genesis in the spiritual home of the British royal family

A genesis in the spiritual home of the British royal family

A decisive turning point came in 2017, when Col&MacArthur obtained an official license from the British Ministry of Defense and became a supplier to the Royal Guard. This recognition caught the attention of Paul Wright, Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II. During an interview at St. James's Palace in London, he suggested the creation of a watch dedicated to the centenary of the Armistice. Thus, Armistice 1918, Col&MacArthur's first commemorative piece, was born. This Armistice 1918 collection is limited to 1,918 numbered pieces.

“You have won the greatest battle in history and saved the most sacred cause: the freedom of the world.”

— Ferdinand FOCH (1851-1929)

Col&MacArthur collaborated with the city of Compiègne in France and the city of Mons in Belgium. As part of these partnerships, a copy was presented to Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel in the Armistice signing carriage. It was also presented by the city of Mons to Princess Astrid. Finally, Albert II of Monaco received this symbolic piece in memory of his grandfather Louis II, who had fought in the trenches.

Technical description
